Cellulose Acetate
Cellulose acetate begins as cotton and wood pulp. Most people who wear it never learn that.
There is a word that gets used carelessly in eyewear. The word is acetate. It appears on product pages, in brand descriptions, on tags that hang from temple tips in retail stores. It sounds technical enough to feel like an answer. Most of the time it is not.
Acetate, on its own, describes a category so broad it is almost meaningless. The acetate in a fifteen-dollar pair of gas station sunglasses and the acetate in a handmade Italian frame are technically related, in the same way that particleboard and walnut are both wood. The material matters. But which version of the material matters more.
Cellulose acetate — the kind used in eyewear worth keeping — begins as cotton linters and wood pulp. These are natural fibres, harvested, broken down chemically, and reformed into sheets. The process is slow. The sheets are pressed and cured, sometimes for weeks, and the result is a material with a density and warmth that synthetic alternatives cannot replicate. When you hold a frame made from cellulose acetate and then hold one made from injection-moulded plastic, the difference registers in your hand before it registers in your eyes. One has weight. The other has a shape.
Colour in cellulose acetate is not applied to the surface. It exists within the material itself, layered during the sheet-making process. A tortoise pattern in good acetate has depth — amber beneath brown beneath black, shifting slightly depending on where the frame was cut from the sheet. No two frames are identical, even in the same colourway, because the pattern distribution changes across the block. This is a feature, not a defect. It means the frame you own is not quite like any other.
Italian cellulose acetate is considered the benchmark for the industry. The manufacturers in Italy — a small number of specialist companies, most of them family-run — supply the raw material to independent eyewear makers across Europe and beyond. The sheets arrive at the workshop in blocks, and from that point forward, everything that happens to the material is a reduction. Cutting, milling, filing, sanding, polishing. Nothing is added. The frame is found inside the block, not built on top of it.
We specify cellulose acetate on every product page because we think the material deserves its full name. Calling it acetate is not wrong. But it is incomplete. And in a market where incomplete descriptions are used to obscure the difference between a plant-based material and a petroleum-based imitation, the full name is the honest one.
